Where do squirrels live and how are they doing in and around Berlin?

Nearly everyone has seen squirrels in and around Berlin, but our knowledge of these agile rodents is limited. In order to learn more about where exactly they prefer to spend their time, which variations in fur colour are to be found or how common are external conspicuousness that indicate nutritional problems or diseases, the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (Leibniz-IZW) launched a five-month Citizen Science project on 18 May 2020.

Interested citizens of Berlin and surrounding communities can report sightings, upload photos and answer questions about the location and health status of the sighted animals. Participants can then view their own reports as well as those of others on an interactive map, obtain further information on squirrels and other wild animals in the city - and last but not least be part of a real research project.

More information can be found on the website of the project "Berliner Stadtwildtiere".
